Kirby Zak, now the star midfielder of the Sam Houston State University women's soccer team, began her career playing soccer in her own front yard against her older sister.

Playing against olde competition help set the tempo for Zak.

When she was seven, Kirby began playing on a real soccer field as part of a team, and by the time she was 13, she was already playing for elite club teams like Texas Image and Texas Lightening.

The Sam Houston State Bearkats defeated Central Arkansas, 17-14, in a defensive battle Saturday to jump back to .500 at 5-5 overall and 3-3 in the Southland Conference.

After a dismal performance at McNeese State last week, the Bearkat defense put the lock down on a tough Central Arkansas offense in Sam Houston's final home game of the season.
