The Student Senate elected a new external affairs chair and a new rules and regulations chair Wednesday after the former chairs simultaneously resigned this past weekend.

Corey Nichols, a sophomore general studies major, was elected chair of rules and regulations following extensive debate. Student Services Chair Scott Smith moved that the vote be conducted by secret ballot, and the motion was immediately seconded. The final tally was 24-16-6 for Senator Nichols, Senator Brian Foley and Senator William Dugat respectively with one abstention.

"I think we're going to have a great officer team this year that will accomplish several goals, and I think we will represent the students of Texas A&M effectively," Nichols said.

Owen Taylor, a senior animal science major, was elected external affairs chair after defeating junior political science major Jr. Raimond. Academic Affairs Chair Jeri Ann Henry moved for the vote to be conducted by secret ballot, and the motion was again immediately seconded. The final tally was 26-18, in favor of Senator Taylor.

"I'm thrilled to have this opportunity, and I realize the huge responsibility that has been placed on my shoulders. I am going to do my best to effectively represent the students of this University," Taylor said. "I won't let them down."

Taylor said his committee would be addressing three major issues this year, including tuition deregulation, the top 10 percent law and affirmative action. Taylor also stressed that the committee needed to focus on local issues and not overlook the local needs of students.

"In order to get a cap for tuition deregulation, we need to form a coalition with other universities across the state," Taylor said. "We can't do it ourselves. We have strength in numbers."

Senior management major Logan said he Renfrow urged students to become involved with Senate and to get to know their representatives.

"I'm very excited about this year," said Renfrow. "I can't wait to see what Senate is going to accomplish for the students of Texas A&M.
