Mail Call: Attack done by individuals, not University policy

In response to Mike Walters' June 27 mail call:

Mr. Walters argues that the University's focus on racial diversity promotes racism and that the University's admissions policies are responsible for "fueling the source of this hate." I am staunchly against unequal admissions standards simply for the purpose of promoting diversity, but it is ridiculous to presume that such a policy directly leads to students being physically attacked. Rational people object to rules they dislike with more peaceful forms of protest. The recent attack of an A&M student was simply a case of some idiots out on a rampage. The only people to blame for the attack are the idiots themselves.

As a side note, if our intention in altering admissions standards is to create equal opportunities for all Americans to get a college education, we should create policies based on economic status rather than race. After all, the poor - regardless of race - face the greatest uphill battle of any group in the pursuit of a quality education.
