Mail Call: Racism existed at A&M before its diversity efforts

In response to Mike Walters' June 27 mail call:

Mike Walters' blaming supporters of diversity and tolerance for hate crimes such as those suffered by Ravi Mallipeddi is absurd and disturbing. Since joining the TAMU faculty in 1984, I have regularly read about, had reported to me, or witnessed acts of harassment, hate speech and physical assault directed against minority members of the campus community. Racism and homophobia on this campus are deep-rooted and persistent.

Anyone who thinks this campus and the surrounding community were in a state of racial harmony prior to the advent of the University's efforts to promote diversity is in a sad state of ignorance - ignorance that the University's diversity efforts are attempting to eliminate. Clearly those efforts were not successful in Mr. Walters' case.
