"I'm very happy that they trusted me with the funding," Cepeda-Benito said. "I think it's going to give me a very good opportunity to work with Mexican-Americans, and they will benefit from the research. I think it's good for the community, myself professionally and Texas A&M."
Murguia said the aim of the center is to have policy recommendations come from the research.
"Ideally, the policy recommendations would go into the political arena, and the people in charge of different civic and political organizations could then provide some funding to actually correct some problems," he said.
Murguia said understanding the cause of problems affecting a population is crucial, and the professors' research is important.
"If you don't really understand the causes of the problem you can just throw some money at it and it does no good," he said. "If we're successful it's going to show A&M is working on issues that concern diversity, that A&M looks to the future. This is extremely forward-looking for A&M."
