Lindsey Kinnebrew said she always shudders when she is asked to remember the day she moved into the dorm her freshman year.

"I remember four endless flights of stairs up to the fourth floor and four long flights down," said Kinnebrew, a junior history major. "Fortunately, as I was making my second trip back to the car to get another load, a nice volunteer came and really helped my family out."

On August 21, many students from the Class of 2009 will arrive in College Station to move into their dorms. Ruth Ann Wolfe, assistant to the director of Residence Life, said she hopes students in Kinnebrew's situation will discover friendly volunteers more than willing to lend a helping hand. With move-in day quickly approaching, Wolfe said Residence Life is once again looking for people to volunteer and help out.

"We're trying to get volunteers to come out," Wolfe said. "We welcome members of the community, University faculty, staff and especially students and student organizations. It's a great effort to make a positive and welcoming impression on incoming students and parents and, also, to make the move-in process more pleasant."

President Robert M. Gates said he moved into his college dorm with only his parents present to help, even though he did not have quite as many boxes as Texas A&M freshmen bring to their new dorms.

"I arrived in late August 1961 at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Va., 1,100 miles from my home in Kansas," Gates said. "I was 17. My parents had driven me. The college had over-admitted and my freshman dorm, (so my) room was the fourth floor attic of an ancient dormitory - un-airconditioned. I shared the attic with about 40 other guys. It was laid out like an army barracks. I had two suitcases - nothing electronic except my alarm clock. As my parents left, my mother was in tears over my lamentable living conditions and leaving me so far from home. The good news: Things could only get better, and did."

Matt Vaclavik, a senior mechanical engineering major, said volunteers helped him when he moved into the dorms.

"When I moved into Aston, my mom and I had to park a mile way so it was nice to have someone with a dolly around to help me carry all my boxes and heavy things like a minifridge," Vaclavik said.

Wolfe said there are already 40 volunteers signed up to help on move-in day. Wolfe said she predicts more volunteers will sign up when more students return to College Station in August.

"We still need volunteers," Wolfe said. "Last year we had 450 volunteers, and this year we are aiming to get 500 volunteers. We never turn volunteers down."

Anyone interested in being a volunteer can apply at http://reslife.tamu.edu. Questions can be emailed to housing@tamu.edu or Wolfe can be contacted at 862-3168. Volunteers will receive gray T-shirts to wear on move-in day.
