Prospective students from El Paso head to Aggieland for Weekend

Approximately 40 high school students from El Paso are visiting Texas A&M this weekend - the largest single group to come to the campus through the university's VIP (Very Important Prospects) program and the one that has traveled the greatest distance.

While on their visit that continues until Sunday morning, the El Paso students are experiencing a bit of college life - touring the campus, seeing its residence halls and dining at several locations. They also are having opportunities to meet with representatives of the university's academic colleges in addition to having sessions with officials for admissions and financial aid. Many of them will also get a taste of life in the Corps of Cadets.

A concluding highlight of their visit will be attending the Texas A&M versus Oklahoma State football game Saturday afternoon.

For more information or a schedule of events planned for the students, contact Nicole Munoz or Margaret Hernandez at (979) 845-3741.

Researcher to teach nutrition science class in front of camera

At Texas A&M, Joanne R. Lupton fills many positions. A regents professor and nutrition researcher with joint appointments from A&M and Texas Agricultural Experiment Station, she is a University Faculty and holder of the William W. Allen Endowed Chair in nutrition with the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. And now she can add another title to her resume: television star. Lupton will be one of the scientists featured on the series, NASA SCIence Files, which is shown on many Public Broadcasting Stations across the country. This Emmy award-winning series about science is designed for third- to fifth-graders. Each hour-long episode looks at one field of science. Past episodes have explored such topics as space, oceans, weather, engineering, animal life, plants and electronics. Lupton's episode will be called "The Case of the Physical Fitness Challenge," and is scheduled to air at 11 a.m. Wednesday.
