![]() Evan O´Connell - The Battalion Barry Ivins in his bar, The Corner, refutes accusations of discrimination made against him in a meeting with the Northgate District Association Tuesday night. |
Barry Ivins, owner of The Corner bar on Northgate, said Student Body President Jim Carlson erroneously labeled The Corner as a discriminatory bar Tuesday at a meeting with the Northgate District Association.
Ivins said Carlson's claims were based on a personal experience, where one of Carlson's friends was turned away from entering the bar.
Carlson, a senior political science major, said Ivins' claims are "absolutely not true" and that he has heard allegations of discrimination at The Corner from other students.
"I wasn't there to point the finger at anyone," Carlson said. "If anything, I'd like to handle this the peaceful way, and like I said at the meeting last night, I just want to change (people's) perceptions of the bars."
Ivins said he has not had an issue with discrimination at his bar and that his bar caters to minorities and graduate students.
Will Hailey, speaker of the Student Senate, said the senate is compiling specific accounts of all student grievances related to Northgate bars, but The Battalion was unable confirm if there have been any other student reports of discrimination by The Corner.
Ivins said that about a month ago, during a home football game weekend, Carlson and a friend to tried enter The Corner, but Carlson's friend was turned away because he appeared to be intoxicated. Carlson was not intoxicated, Ivins said.
"The guy's eyes were bloodshot, and he was swaying," Ivins said. "I told the individual he was more than welcome to come back any other night, but we weren't gonna serve him that night."
Carlson said while his friend was denied entry into the bar, he was not drunk.
"(That) friend of mine did not drink alcohol at all at that time," Carlson said. "I got in, no problem - then he didn't get in, and the only comment that came out of (the doorman's) mouth was he's drunk."
Carlson said he talked to Ivins and asked if the problem was the way his friend was dressed, but the only response he got was "he's drunk." Carlson said he then asked Ivins about the allegations of the Corner's discriminatory practices.
