When Caitlin Jones, a junior interdisciplinary studies major, first heard the lead singer of Dashboard Confessional, she knew Chris Carrabba was something special. Drawn to his lyrics and perfect faux-hawk, Jones doesn't want people to think that her crush is a 13-year-old-girl's obsession.
Celebrity crushes appear in all forms, be it movie star, musician or athlete. For some, the obsession begins as appreciation of talent, and for others it's a physical attraction. But, whatever its cause, celebrity crushes have a place in the hearts of many college students.
"Chris Carrabba is basically the best singer/songwriter that exists," Jones said. "He's like a poet, and he's cute - real cute. So I had Photoshop, and there's a section where you can superimpose people's pictures onto other photographs. There was a picture of a woman and a man in a canoe on a lake, and you can change the pictures around, so Chris and I were on the cover of some fake wedding magazine in a canoe."
But it's not only Carrabba who Jones has developed a crush on. Comedian Michael Ian Black, formerly of the TV show "Ed," caught Jones' eye while appearing regularly on VH1.
"I didn't know who he was until 'I Love the '80s,'" Jones said. "I just love his straight-faced sarcasm. The kid never cracks a smile, and he's so funny. He's sort of old and married and Jewish, but none of that stops me - it's all about the love. Some people think it's creepy, but it's all about hotness - and being Jewish. I refer to Chris as my husband, but I'm also dating Michael."
Taylor Mills, a junior finance major, prefers the allure of actress Scarlett Johansson. For Mills, Johansson represents the ideal actress, bringing a sense of realism to the characters she plays.
"Scarlett is talented, and gives off a real classy vibe," Mills said. "I think that's hot. She's classy and talented - and has good lips. It's physical attraction, but she's a really good actress - that's one of the main things. It's more than an appreciation, and less than love. It's an infatuation."
Mills, an art house film fan, first noticed Johansson after seeing her repeatedly in independent and small-budget films.
"I'd like to sit her down and tell her how much I enjoy her work," Mills said. "I really think she brings depth to roles she plays. She kind of got her start in art house, and now she's doing blockbusters, which shows not only her versatility but her appreciation for the art. If I were to ever meet her I would compliment her on her work and then try to seduce her."
