![]() Brian Wills - The Battalion Redshirt freshman quarterback Stephen McGee flies into the end zone to seal an 11-yard touchdown run in the third quarter of the football game against the University of Texas Friday afternoon. |
After Friday's dogfight between Texas A&M and the University of Texas, you would be hard-pressed not to look back on the game and wonder what could have been for the Aggies who were defeated 40-29 for only the fourth home loss in the last 11 meetings between the two schools.
In a game where nobody gave the Aggies a fighting shot, A&M took the No. 2-ranked Texas Longhorns down to the wire Friday, and with a couple of bounces, could have possibly ended up winning the game in front of a crowd of 86,617 - the fourth largest crowd to see a game in the series between the two teams at Kyle Field.
With Reggie McNeal nursing a sore ankle that didn't allow him to suit up, A&M turned the A&M offense over to redshirt freshman quarterback Stephen McGee who, in turn, kept the A&M offense clicking on all cylinders without the veteran McNeal under center.
"Coach told me on Tuesday that he was turning the keys over to me," McGee said. "I just tried to stay focused and come out with a clear mind."
McGee did just that Friday; becoming the first freshman quarterback to rush for more than 100 yards since A&M quarterback Bucky Richardson did in 1987, as he ended the day with 108 yards rushing.
