The Aggie women's basketball team will try to continue its strong conference play and improve to 5-2 in the Big 12 when it plays Colorado Tuesday in Boulder.
The Buffaloes need a win to have any hope of making a run in the North, as they are 1-5 in the Big 12. Their sense of urgency should lead to a hard-played game because in order for them to win, they will need to out match A&M in intensity, and they will have to take care of the basketball.
The Aggies' goal will be to force as many turnovers as possible using their full court press. Using this strategy, the Aggies have been able to keep tremendous pressure on the ball by rotating a lot of players into the game to keep them fresh.
"We have to be able to go on the road and press in that altitude, and use our bench," said A&M head coach Gary Blair. "We also don't want to get into a half-court game with them, because they are taller than us, and they are good shooters."
Even though the Buffaloes have only one conference win, they are still a dangerous team at home.
"Colorado might be in the bottom (of the Big 12), but they're not used to being in the bottom. Their program is used to winning," Blair said.
Colorado's one Big 12 win came at home against Kansas. It would be easy for the Aggies to look ahead to Oklahoma because of Colorado's poor record, but they could suffer the same fate as Kansas if that were the case.
It is also important that the Aggies get their fifth conference win tonight because of the tough schedule that they have coming up. A&M's difficult road ahead includes 13th ranked Oklahoma and Texas twice, as well as Texas Tech and Baylor, both of whom the Aggies have already lost to this season.
"We have to win," Blair said.
A&M will try to stay unbeaten against the Big 12 North, an achievement that will be very important if the Aggies have plans of crashing the NCAA tournament.
