University established in 1871

I find it sad how most Aggies do not know when this great University was established. If one were to ask anyone on campus, the most likely response would be "1876 duh," as an answe,r plus a look of, "are you stupid or something." To all of you who would say 1871, I'm sorry but you're wrong. A&M was actually established on April 17th, 1871 (check your catalogs before scoffing). Why the discrepancy? Some historians attribute it to an attempt to separate the establishment of Texas' first public University from Reparations, when many black state congressmen were responsible for legislation that gave rise to TAMC. A few years ago this was a vivid debate on campus; however, it has died in the last 3 years. I believe it's time for A&M and all Aggies to correct this mistake, and give due credit to the real founders of our school.
