The China-U.S. Relations Forum conducted its first meeting Wednesday at the Memorial Student Center to introduce its officers and outline the organization's objectives.

Logan Renfrow, president of the forum, said the main aim of the organization was to facilitate interaction among Chinese and American students so that they have a better understanding of each other's cultures.

"The China-U.S. Relations Forum is committed to connecting Aggies, both American and Chinese, under dynamics of mutual understanding, cultural exchange and economical, political and academic interests in order to develop future leaders of Sino-American relations," Renfrow said.

The forum was thought up at the China-U.S. Relations conference in Beijing last year, Renfrow said.

"The whole idea of this forum was established when a group of students attended the China-U.S. Relations conference in Beijing in the November of 2005, sponsored by the Bush school, and realized the importance of the relation between the two nations," Renfrom said.

This forum is a great opportunity for American and Chinese students to know about the economy, traditions and cultures of the two nations said Chen Jing, a graduate student in agricultural engineering.

"Our organization will be a great help to the students of A&M by being the information bridge between the Chinese and American students and provide them with the taste of the diverse cultures," Jing said.

Ian Weber, a professor of communication, said this forum was for the students to interact and understand the importance of the relationship between these two countries.

"It is very important and essential that the students of these countries collaborate from the grass roots level, as these students are the future of these two large and influential countries," Weber said.

Weber said that over the past few years, A&M has taken great initiatives in improving the relations between students from different countries.

"It is good to realize that A&M is making conscious efforts to recognize the benefits of the initiatives that enable the students to take the first step in the direction in making these countries work together," Weber said.

The forum could act as a platform for interaction between students from the two countries said Weber.

"In the long run we can have students from both the countries visiting on short two week study trips to learn about the cultures and the principles behind them and go back and spread the awareness among their counterparts," Weber said.
