Filing for student body elections for the 2007-08 academic year has begun.

The filing process is taking place Friday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the first floor of the Memorial Student Center. It is the first step for students wanting to hold a leadership position at Texas A&M.

"It is a great way to serve A&M," said Election Commissioner Jim Reed.

Last year about 150 candidates filed for student elections. Students must file every year regardless if they have served as an officer in previous years, Reed said.

"Being elected into a position as class treasurer allowed me to have an impact and inform my college," said Ashlie Sears, director of operations for the elections commission and treasurer for the Class of 2006.

Sears served as a class treasurer and as a senator for the College of Geosciences, but felt it was time for a different path as a graduate student.

"I decided to try something new as a graduate student and work on the other side of the elections," Sears said.

As the director of operations, Sears keeps the candidates organized. Candidates must register all of their campaign materials through her before they use them whether they are in print or broadcast form.

Students who file must pay a $25-$40 filing fee depending on which office they choose to run for. There is a mandatory meeting for all candidates that will take place at 6:15 p.m. Wednesday. Candidates then have until March 18 to prepare their campaigns. Campaigning will begin at noon on March 15 and continues until at midnight on March 27.
