Jerushia MacHelle Knox, 19, was arrested Monday in Oveta Culp Hobby Hall after police found a bag of marijuana, five grams of cocaine and drug paraphernalia in her room.

The freshman wildlife and fisheries science major was confined to the Brazos County jail around 2 p.m. Monday.

University Police were searching Knox's dorm room when they found a locked box under her desk, according to the police report. Upon opening it, police confiscated the cocaine, marijuana and paraphernalia and took Knox into custody. After spending more than 24 hours in the county jail, Knox was released on a $4,300 bail.

Knox was charged with possession of a controlled substance, which is a second-degree felony punishable by up 20 years in prison and a fine not to exceed $10,000. The possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia charges are both misdemeanors.

"That makes me feel really uneasy that that would happen," said freshman finance major and Hobby resident Austin Harmon. "It just makes us as Hobby residents look bad, what with things like that happening."

Lauren Elliot, first floor resident adviser, said residence officials at Hobby Hall could not comment.
