"For those who love, time is eternity"
This was a favorite quote of Susan Marie Calvey Martin, a senior psychology major from San Antonio who dedicated her life to helping others through giving to the homeless, donating to charities and working as a sidewalk counselor of pregnancy help centers.
"She donated a lot of her time and money to helping others in need, and she was liked by everyone who met her," said Andrew Martin, her husband and a junior psychology major.
Susan Calvey Martin was diagnosed with cancer in May 2006 and died Feb. 14, after undergoing chemotherapy and radiation treatments.
Martin had metastatic cancer with an unknown primary, which means that doctors were unsure of where the cancer developed and could only treat the symptoms and tumors, her husband said.
"Cancer did not define her," said Joseph Calvey, Susan's father. "She was scared to die, but had strong faith in God and faced every moment with a strength that I've never seen in another person."
Martin spent her time at A&M being actively involved in student organizations, serving as the president of Aggies for Life, treasurer of the Psychology Club and president of Transfer Aggies.
"She really liked being involved and always put everyone ahead of herself - friends, family, clubs and even me," her husband said. "She was one of those people that everyone loved after talking to her once."
"She had a presence about her - the kind where when she walked in the room, people would immediately know who she was," said Sarah Galvan, who attended Incarnate Word High School with Martin. "She was easy to like, easy to trust and fiercely loyal to her friends."
Martin was always known for her smile and sense of humor, Galvan said.
"From birthday parties to chemistry, she always kept me laughing with her funny stories," Galvan said.
Andrew Martin met Susan Calvey at a church retreat in San Antonio and said she was very involved with her church at home and attended St. Mary's Catholic Church while she was in College Station. The two were married on Feb. 2, 2006, at Martin's home in San Antonio.
