Open up to other cultures

I have been impressed with Travis Mitchell's columns over the last few months and would like to say that it is a breath of fresh air to read articles such as "With Open Arms" on Thursday. I have read other Mail Call letters asking what the point of diversity is and that we should focus on unity. I believe diversity is unity. Every single person on this campus has records and stereotypes concerning groups of people. The trick seems to be awareness and openness. I think a great way to achieve true unity is to understand each other. Get to really know someone. Yes, we naturally tend to aggregate toward people similar to us, but think of what you might be missing out on by not expanding your awareness of humanity and the world. We have an amazing opportunity at Texas A&M to be surrounded by so many people who may appear different than us, but in the end we all seek the same things in life: to love and to be loved. Surely, these common human needs and desires can transcend our differences.
