William Perry, vice provost of Texas A&M, was named president of Eastern Illinois University in Charleston, Ill., on Tuesday and will begin serving in his new position July 1.
Perry, 61, will be retuning to his Midwestern roots as a Missouri native, said a statement from Eastern Illinois.
"This is a tremendous opportunity for Dr. Perry, a well-respected and highly skilled consensus builder, to utilize his outstanding leadership qualities at an excellent institution such as Eastern Illinois University," said Eddie Davis, interim president of A&M, in a memo to faculty and staff. "I've had the privilege of working with Bill Perry for almost three decades, and I know firsthand of the countless lives he has touched in a positive way - students, faculty, and staff."
Davis added that Perry exemplified the core values of A&M - leadership, excellence, integrity, loyalty, selfless service and respect.
During a tenure that spanned 36 years, Perry served as a professor of mathematics, dean of faculties and chaired the Council on the Built Environment, which oversees ongoing expansion projects at the University.
"Bill's many contributions to Texas A&M and his friendship will long be remembered," Davis said.
Perry came to the University in 1977 as a professor. He received two bachelor's degrees in mathematics and history from Park College in Missouri, and a master's and doctorate degree in mathematics from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.
Perry's wife Linda is a senior lecturer in accounting at the Lowry Mays Business School at A&M and will be leaving with her husband.
"Linda Perry, who will be an extraordinary first lady, will also be deeply missed," Davis said in the memo. "She is recognized as one of our most popular teachers as well as a future partner in Perry's long and deep community involvement."
