Tell us what we are eating

Today I saw a sign at the Olla Roja at the Pi R Square Dining Facility that I believe was interesting. It stated that both the refried and black beans contained meat products. I asked an employee about this, and they said they had just learned this on April 5. The refried beans are cooked in bacon grease, and the black beans are cooked in animal lard. To many vegetarians and non-meat-eating folks, this could be a concern, since a common assumption is that these foods would not have any meat products. This is especially true since Olla Roja isn't known for cooking 'authentic Southern dishes.' I don't think it is fair to just place a sign stating that the beans contain meat products, and get by with removing a dining option for many. I believe that if this hasn't been addressed to the student body already, it would be wise for Dining Services to make note of the products that contain meat or meat substances. Not everyone has a chance to check out food.tamu.edu to verify what they consume.
