What does it take to make a great summer movie? Is it a family vacation gone wrong? Toes in the sand and a wide blue horizon? Or maybe just a great game of baseball? The Battalion suggests these films, and perhaps a margarita, for the perfect summer afternoon.

The Sandlot (1993)

One bat, one ball, a dirt field and one giant dog - those are the makings of a great summer. Even if you didn't grow up in the 1960s, and even if you don't love baseball, "The Sandlot" is one summer movie no American should miss. With friends like "Yeah-Yeah", "Ham", "Squints", and the ghost of Babe Ruth, who wouldn't have a great summer?

Parent Trap (1961)

Haley Mills (a.k.a the original "hott" girl-turned-twins), stars as Susan and Sharon, the separated twin daughters of a pair of fickle divorceés. Their parents, arguably the most beautiful couple ever filmed, Maureen O'Hara and Brian Keith, make me laugh every time they open their mouths. It's good, clean humor that is actually, well, humorous.

The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants (2005)

I love movies that really draw me into the story, rather than leaving me as just an outsider looking in, and this movie does just that. Four girls, best friends from childhood, all have separate summer plans for the first time in their lives. This film follows their adventures for two hours full of laughing, tears and a whole lot of fun.

My Girl (1991)

What girl doesn't love "My Girl?" Vada Sultenfuss is your typical pre-teen girl growing up in the 1970s. Throw in the facts that her mother is dead, her father runs a funeral home and she is in love with her English teacher, and you get a new twist to the classic coming-of-age story.

Dazed and Confused (1993)

"Dazed and Confused" is one of those slacker movies with no running plot or any solid acting, but delivers with an array of one-liners, hilarious character situations and dialogue. It is one of the best "chill-out" summer movies of all time.

National Lampoon's Vacation (1983)

"Vacation" is a quintessential summer film about a father wanting to spend quality time with his wife and kids, and it started a movie franchise. This film has it all: Chevy Chase at his best, slap-stick, tongue-in-cheek and farcical comedy, and one of the funniest movie posters ever made.

Baywatch: Hawaiian Wedding (2003)

Our favorite lifeguard, Mitch Buchannon, makes a trip to Hawaii to get married, and the main characters from all 10 seasons of Baywatch are there. An incredibly well developed plot thrills the audience with kidnapping and gratuitous slow motion. Boat chases and tropical beaches make this the ultimate summer movie.

Blue Crush (2002)

"Blue Crush," although a hokey teen movie, offers everything a summer movie should: romance, surfing and hot guys - and girls. Troubled by her past and pressured by her friends, Anne Marie manages to fall in love with football star Matt Tollman (Matthew Davis). If the plot isn't intriguing, then the beautiful Hawaiian setting will have you in the mood for summer.
