One windy afternoon, two friends were trying to recuperate from another demanding collegiate day. The pair longed for the leisurely days from third grade when they flew kites. Suddenly, in a moment of silliness, the idea for the Aggie Kite Club came to fruition.

"It was just like one of those things that we thought - wait, this could work," said Andrew Lee, senior English major and co-director of the Aggie Kite Club.

The Aggie Kite Club began as an interesting idea among friends.

"My friends Allison and Andrew started it and it just seemed like a fun way to relax," said Meghan Beason sophomore nutritional sciences major and Aggie Kite Club Risk Executive. The Aggie Kite Club may have started on a whim, but after a trip to the student government office, the club became a recognized student organization quickly.

"After we filled out the paperwork, it all happened really fast," Lee said. "We got an e-mail one or two days later saying that it was one of the fastest clubs ever to be approved."

Because the group was established so quickly, there is

currently one future member and seven officers who knew each other prior to the club's establishment.

"We're all from the same group of friends. None of us have flown a kite since the third grade," said Lee.

They may not be kite-flying aficionados, but the officers of the Aggie Kite Club have lofty ambitions.

"I would like to do some sort of fundraiser, like for Twin City Missions or some other non-profit organization," Lee said. "It would be cool if we could start the first ever Bryan-College Station kite flying festival. People could pay a dollar or two to fly kites. Not a lot of money. Anything could help."

Though expectations for the club are high, the Aggie Kite Club will promote leisurely activities and camaraderie among Aggies.

"We just want to be kids again and fly kites while expanding each others' Aggie networks," said Lee.

The requirements to be in the club are attending at least one activity each semester and the purchase of a club T-shirt.

"We haven't designed our shirt yet, but we know it's going to say 'Practice Safe Kiting,'" Lee said.

I'm so proud of my baby girl. I knew she would succeed at Aggieland.
