Former Aggie football wide receiver Bethel Johnson signs with Texans
Issue date: 7/10/07 Section: News
Bethel Johnson, a former A&M wide receiver, signed with the Houston Texans Monday. His contract with the Texans will be for one year at $650,000.
Johnson, a free agent after playing with the Minnesota Vikings for most 2006, gained most of his NFL experience with the New England Patriots, who drafted him in 2003. Johnson earned two Super Bowl rings as a receiver for the Patriots.
At A&M, Johnson played in 35 games in four seasons, though he sat out most of the 2001 season because a hit to the stomach ruptured his spleen. Johnson gained 1,740 receiving yards and scored 12 touchdowns as an Aggie.
As a professional, Johnson caught 39 passes for 606 yards. The Texans plan to use Johnson primarily as a kick returner, where he averaged 24.6 yards on 147 career kickoff returns.
Johnson signed a one-year contract with the Philedelphia Eagles in March, but was released on June 5.
