Turgeon focuses on basics at camp

Skills. Greg Oden had them in becoming the first pick in this year's NBA Draft, and Kevin Durant won all major Player of the Year awards. Both had great skills. Not every camper will become a superstar, but the all-star lineage will always pass onto those who have sound basics to build on.
As Napoleon Dynamite would say, "Nunchuck skills, bow hunting skills, computer hacking skills; girls only want boyfriends with skills." The best way to get said skills is to go straight to the source. That is the mantra Mark Turgeon's Basketball Camp follows. Go back to the source, to the fundamentals.
Turgeon, Texas A&M's new basketball coach, will have the opportunity to reach out to his community and to many around Texas.
Approximately 300 players will attend the camp from July 22-26. Campers will run, jump, block and dunk for five days, filling the halls of the G. Rollie White Coliseum with grunting, screaming and a perpetual rain of sweat. The shoes will be squeaking and players will be hollering. Sunday through Thursday, players will eat, drink and sleep in a basketball state of mind.
Headed by Turgeon, the camp will include involvement from Aggie players, coaches and several other basketball coaches from around Texas. Campers will be grouped according to their age, skill level and height.
Between breakfast and dinner, campers will compete in hotshot contests, free throw shooting and several three-on-three games.
Players will separate into groups and play nine league games, where they will build on the fundamentals and skills learned during camp.
The Mark Turgeon Basketball Camp may not be known nationally, but the skills learned will be retained and used by players to realize their potential. Maybe the all-stars will become next year's Greg Oden or Kevin Durant.
