The Texas A&M Department of Security and the University police will host the "National Night Out" at the University Apartment's Community Center at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

"National Night Out" is a nationwide night for members of the community to host family friendly block-parties and meet their neighbors. University Police Department Master Officer Kristi Hosea said that there are 9,420 communities from the United States and Canada participating this year, and the number of parties registered in College Station is up from six last year to 29. Each participating block party must register with the local police so that police officers can attend.

The kick-off will be held at Target and Post Oak Mall in College Station on Saturday. Festivities included hot dogs, a dunking booth, fire trucks, informational tables and "McGruff the crime dog." When children approached the information table for police badge stickers, they were sworn to make everyone in their car buckle their seat belts.

"The kick-off has been a great success," said College Station Police Officer Dave Fallwell. "And the kids love getting to dunk a firefighter in the booth."

Hosea said students, faculty and staff will participate in the "National Night Out" festivities at the University Apartment's Community Center Tuesday. There will be food, drinks, A&M police cars, a fire truck and the PHI Air-med 12 helicopter.

"National Night Out is about building community camaraderie and relationships between the community and the police," Hosea said.
