The Search Advisory Committee, which was established to assist in the search for a new Texas A&M president, has turned over its list of potential candidates to A&M's Board of Regents.
"The search committee has sent the Regents recommendations concerning several excellent candidates to serve as the next president of Texas A&M University," said A&M System Chancellor Mike McKinney, according to a press release.
The names of the candidates on the list have not yet been released.
More than 100 applicants have made inquiries into the position, and the Search Advisory Committee worked to select the most desirable contenders in order to make their recommendations to the Board of Regents.
"We have now embarked on a careful review of all qualified candidates, recognizing the next president will be a vital part of ensuring Texas A&M achieves and maintains greatness," said Bill Jones, board chairman.
The position opened up after former president Robert Gates left to become U.S. Secretary of Defense. Since Gates' departure, Ed Davis has served as interim president of A&M.
The Search Committee has now disbanded, and it is up to the Board of Regents to continue with their decision making process. The board will release their own list of finalists once they have made their selections.
The board is under no strict timeline to complete the selection process said John White, board vice chairman in the release.
"We need to get this right," he said. "We are choosing the leader of one of the top institutions in the country, and we want to make sure the individual we select has the background, energy and vision needed to lead a world-class institution like Texas A&M University."
