The Ross Volunteers welcomed selected juniors at an initiation ceremony Monday.

As part of the initiation ceremony, juniors become full members of the Ross Volunteer Company. The company participates in Silver Taps, Muster and other honor ceremonies.

Zac Nelson, a senior political science major and public relations officer for the Ross Volunteers, or RVs, explained other responsibilities of the company.

"The RVs serve most notably as the official honor guard for the governor of Texas, as well as the honor guard for Rex, king of Mardi Gras," Nelson said. "Often, RVs are called upon to give their time in service to the University or its students, past and present."

Nelson said the Ross Volunteers hold themselves to a certain code of conduct, which involves upholding the standards of a soldier, statesman and knightly gentleman. These are the standards by which the juniors were selected.

"I can't go into specifics, but I will say that the selection has nothing to do with Corps rank, physical fitness ability or academic performance," Nelson said. "Rather, the selection is entirely based on one's character as seen by the senior class."

The first practice for the company will be Wednesday.

Ross Flynt, a senior electrical engineering major and Ross Volunteer company member said he looks forward to the coming year and the passing of duties to the new inductees.

"The first practice is an initiation into the process that will train all new RVs in all protocols that are required of them," Flynt said. "I am glad that I will be passing down my duty to the new RVs, because I am sure they are more than capable of meeting the challenge presented to them."
