"Everyone has heard the rumors about the Tech fans," said sophomore marketing major Roxy Allen. "From the rude remarks to people getting stuff thrown on them, it can be scary."
Allen and her friends traveled to Lubbock to visit friends and went to the Tech campus Saturday morning to tailgate.
"We really debated about wearing maroon or not," said Amanda Presley, a sophomore political science major. "We did, of course, and the comments from the Tech fans were endless."
When a Tech Alumni told Allen and Presley to 'be careful in our town,' they knew he wasn't kidding.
"We just kind of laughed it off and said 'Oh we knew he had just given us some great advice!" said Allen.
Other Aggies had similar experiences.
"My friends and I decided to road-trip to Lubbock because we needed a vacation," said Clay Hughes, sophomore finance major. "I had four of my professors warn us to be careful, one even made a comment that Tech people are a 'different breed.'"
The warnings about the fans, though, didn't affect their decision to go, nor discourage them from wearing maroon.
"We made sure to sport our colors to the game," said sophomore general studies major Lane Manley. "But after we lost, we went home and changed. We didn't want to have to deal with that."
They had to deal with a lot. Compared to the girls' stories, the boys had worse experiences.
"There was a lot of profanity directed towards us. They [Tech fans] seemed to go out of their way to say something to us," said Aaron Pelletier, sophomore agricultural business major. "The first thing we heard when we got out there was 'F*** you, y'all faggies!' It was kind of harsh."
Still, some Aggies felt like the stereotype about Tech fans was exaggerated.
"I stayed with a bunch of friends from home that go to Tech," said sophomore civil engineering major Tyler Munson. "We watched the game at their house with several Tech fans and it was fine. Yeah there were comments, but it was just a friendly exchange of words."
The loss on Saturday also had an impact on the rivalry between the fans.
"We went to their tailgates and were decked out in maroon," said Jenn Rubino, sophomore communications major. "We got a few comments, but more so from Aggies saying 'Gig 'em' than anything else. After the game, though, we went to grab a bite to eat at Hooters and it was horrible. The waitresses had to tell the restaurant to quiet down!"
