United Way of the Brazos Valley is teaming up with the Texas A&M organization, Women Helping Out Other People (WHOOP) to present a campus toy drive that will benefit the 24th Annual Radio "Make a Smile Happen," MASH.
Toy collection will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Nov. 27 to Nov. 29 in the Post Oak Mall parking lot. Other donation drop off points will be located on campus in the Memorial Student Center and Wehner.
The collaboration of WHOOP and United Way for this program developed when Melissa Fullmer, a junior communication major, began volunteering with the local chapter of United Way for a sociology class.
"We are required to volunteer at least 20 hours to a local non-profit organization," Fullmer said. "I wanted to really put my time towards a good cause, so I contacted Andress with the United Way of The Brazos Valley and suggested the idea of a fundraiser."
Fullmer said a fundraiser of this size was too big to work on without collaborating with others, so they teamed up with MASH and WHOOP to utilize the Aggie Network.
"I am really excited about this year's toy drive, especially since it is the first one on campus," Fullmer said. "MASH has been sponsoring this event for years now, but this year we decided to bring the opportunity to fellow Aggies."
Fullmer said MASH was able to provide toys for more than 4,500 children in 2006, but she wants to exceed that amount.
"We encourage all Aggies to help put a smile on the faces of thousands of children," Fullmer said. "I know that I am fortunate enough to be blessed with the opportunity to know what it means to truly be an Aggie, and I would like to bring the Aggie spirit, energy, and cohesiveness to many children this Christmas."
Holli Perdue, a senior marketing major, said partnering with WHOOP has been a great resource.
"By partnering with a great student organization like WHOOP, we have been able to reach students at Texas A&M that we may not have reached without their support," she said.
