Jerusha Young, a devout Christadelphian who graduated from the Texas Academy of Math and Science before attending Texas A&M, died Aug. 4.
"She was proud of her very unique name," said Alexandra Fife, a friend of Young from the University of Houston. "But she was most commonly known to her friends as J-Ru."
"She was pretty much known by her laugh," Fife said. "Her laugh can only be described as a mixture of out-of-control joy and hysterical glee."
Young is survived by her older sister Hannah, her younger sister Bethany, and her parents, Susan and Richard.
"She was a devout Christadelphian her whole life," Susan said. "[She believed that] God will resurrect all the dead who were faithful to Him and they will live forever with perfect health and happiness in a beautiful kingdom here on Earth. So she probably took comfort in the fact that she would see her family and friends again, even after death."
"She got baptized as a Christadelphian a few months before her death," Fife said. "She had made a serious commitment to God."
Jerusha was an accomplished student who had achieved a number of academic achievements.
Friends of Jerusha said she was full of talent.
"For as long as I knew her, she never could make up her mind on what career to choose - this was because she was good at everything," Fife said. "When we first met [in ninth grade], she wanted to be a vet, then she changed her mind and wanted to become a missionary-humanitarian to help the people in Africa. And when she was about 19, she was struggling whether to become a pilot or a psychiatrist."
Jerusha was also known for how she cared about people around her.
"Jerusha was always putting other people before herself," Fife said. "For example, one time I went with her to go find her a summer job - she was going to every pet hospital she could find and giving them her résumé. Anyway, by the end of the day, she felt bad that I didn't have a summer job either, so she literally dragged me to an art studio and I got a job there - she was so excited for me."
Susan said, "We all miss her very much and are anxiously awaiting the resurrection so that we can be with her again."
