The Honors Student Council, HSC, will sponsor a multiple sclerosis awareness event at 6 p.m. Friday in Rudder Theater called "So you think Ags can dance?" It will feature several student dance groups with a five-person judging panel and students determing which team is best.
Dance teams who will perform include: the Aggie Wranglers, Fade to Black, Aggie Swing Cats, the Dance Arts Society and Ballet Folklorico Celestial.
Each group will perform a routine in their own genre and another in the style of another group.
"We think that this will show the versatility and skill of the dancing groups, while at the same time, provide something unusual to draw in the audience," said Zach Rathke, a senior philosophy major and HSC president.
HSC Special Events Committee student Ahren Lacy said, "The program will also raise awareness of multiple sclerosis and research. A speaker from the MS Society of Houston will share information throughout the program."
Multiple sclerosis is a chronic, unpredictable neurological disease that affects the central nervous system including the brain, spinal cord and the optic nerves.
"However, due to limitations, [the HSC] is unable to raise money for MS research by charging admission to the program," Rathke said.
Lacy said the Aggie Yell Leaders will make an appearance and provide a special introduction, and though the event is sponsored by the HSC, all students will be admitted.
Senior and President of the Dance Arts Society, Drew Porter, said her group is excited to perform its hip-hop routine that was coordinated by its own Vice President Lauren Howard.
"It is really awesome for [the Dance Arts Society] to perform because it gives more people around campus the chance to see what we can do and do all the time," Porter said.
She said the event is helpful to get the word out for their group so students can get a taste of what the dance group does and then inquire about it at MSC Open House.
Panelists include Student Body President Conner Prochaska, dance professor Molly Snell, ASSIST Director Philip Toledo and HSC's Battle of the Band winners Joseph Holm and Jonathan McGregor.
Students will get the chance to vote for each dance team with their enthusiasm and the opinions from the panelists will determine the winner of the show.
