Committee names Bryan couple 'Parents of the Year'

Kenneth and Gerilyn Kleckley of Bryan are Texas A&M's "2008 Aggie Parents of the Year." The couple received the honor during the All-University Awards program at the closing of Parents' Weekend activities on campus. They were nominated for the honor by their five sons, one daughter-in-law and one future daughter-in-law, all Aggies. "We selected them because they represent the ideal parents who are willing to give themselves to their children in all ways possible and support them in their college and life adventures," said Rebekah Thornton, head of the committee charged with selecting the parents of the year. "They exemplify what it means to be Aggie parents, and I know they will be great Texas A&M Parents of the Year for 2008-2009."

NASA astronaut to headline physics festival, science contest

Faculty and staff of the department of physics at Texas A&M invite residents of the Brazos Valley the Physics Festival on Sunday, which serves as an entertaining and informative scientific extravaganza for all ages. The free annual event, scheduled from noon to 5 p.m. at Texas A&M's Rudder Tower, will begin with a hands-on science exhibition and conclude with a public lecture by NASA astronaut and astronomer Steven Hawley. At 4 p.m., Hawley will present "My Life with the Great Observatories" in Rudder Theater to conclude the day's festivities. Tickets are not required for either activity. Attendees are encouraged to unleash their inner scientists aboard a homemade hovercraft or square-wheeled bicycle and to try out working models of historic artillery and other fun experiments and displays illustrating basic scientific concepts and principles, event organizers note. Middle and high school students are invited to compete for cash prizes in a related science contest to be in Room 601 Rudder Tower. Online registration for the contest is preferred at http://physicsfestival.tamu.edu.

Aggie parents establish $25,000 endowment in name of their children

Steven W. and Elaine Nance gave a $25,000 gift to the Texas A&M Foundation. Their gift established the Michael '08 and Kristen '05 Nance Fish Camp Scholarship Endowment for students of Texas A&M University. The gift will be used to provide registration fees for Fish Camp freshmen participants at Texas A&M. "Through the involvement of our children, we have come to understand the importance of Fish Camp and how this program helps incoming freshmen make the transition to this great University," the couple said. They have given this gift in honor of their children, Kristen, Class of 2005, and Michael, Class of 2008. Kristen graduated from A&M with a bachelor of arts in speech communication and minor in business. She was very involved during her time in Aggieland, serving as the Director of Maggies and as a member of the Delta Delta Delta sorority. She served as a counselor, co-chair and director of Fish Camp. Michael will graduate with a bachelor of science in petroleum engineering. He has been involved in the Society of Petroleum Engineers, Aggie Fish Club and Ol' Ags Society. Like his sister, Michael served as a counselor, co-chair and director of Fish Camp.
