Stjepan Mestrovic, an expert witness at the trials of Abu Ghraib and author of the highly acclaimed book, "The Trials of Abu Ghraib," will participate in a student teach-in Thursday as part of Human Rights Week at Texas A&M.
Mestrovic, a sociology professor, observed and participated as the only non-military expert in the courts martial of those accused in America's prison abuse scandal.
The event will focus on subjects that contain the common element of humanity.
"By having a theoretical framework that incorporates a holistic understanding within the global context of human rights, we will then be able to…work to make the world a more egalitarian place, both here at home and abroad," said Association for Social Entrepreneurs President and key organizer for the event, Andrew Pittz.
The organizers of teach-in intend to broaden the understanding of A&M students about the importance of human rights and the threats to them by foreign peoples and governments and the American government.
Mestrovic, praised by experts in the field such as senior correspondent Adam Zagorin of Time Magazine and Eduardo Bonilla-Silva of Duke University, will address issues such as, 'Who holds responsibility for the Abu Ghraib scandal: a few military soldiers, the so-called bad apples or does the blame go higher?'
The teach-in will include Samuel Cohn, an A&M distinguished sociology professor specializing in global poverty and economic development, and Richa Dhanju, an A&M Ph.D. graduate student who conducted field research involving women in poverty in Dehli, India.
