Bright flashes and an automated emergency ordered all those inside the Memorial Student Center to evacuate because of a fire emergency Wednesday around 6:30 p.m. Students, staff, faculty and visitors stood outside the building not knowing if this was another false alarm, such as was experienced earlier in the semester when balloons covered an emergency light sensor and set off the alarms. Thomas Goehl of the College Station Fire Department confirmed that there had in fact been an emergency. "We had a report of fire or smoke in the elevator room on the second floor," he said. "We had one person that was trapped in between the floors, we were able to get him out." Goehl said there was no fire. "It turned out that it appears that one of the elevator motors had overheated and caused the smoke, and the elevator malfunctioned," he said. The name of the person trapped in the elevator has not been released. The person was reported to be without injury and did not undergo any medical treatment.
