Record numbers to graduate in May
Issue date: 4/29/08 Section: News
A record 5,500 students are expected to receive undergraduate or graduate degrees at commencement ceremonies this spring.
This year there will be five commencement ceremonies instead of the four that have been done since 2001. The ceremonies will be May 9 and 10 at Reed Arena. The speakers will be U.S. Ambassador to South Africa Eric M. Bost, Texas Medical Center President Richard E. Wainerdi, Texas A&M Interim Executive Vice President and Provost Jerry R. Strawser, 2007-2008 Faculty Senate Speaker Angie Hill Price and Distinguished Professor of Political Science George C. Edwards III.
There will be a separate graduation ceremony for an expected 128 students receiving doctor of veterinary medicine degrees. A&M University System Chancellor Michael D. McKinney will address them in Rudder Auditorium May 8.
Registrar Don Carter said, "From an institutional perspective, having to increase the number of graduation ceremonies is a nice problem to have."
A ceremony will include commissioning for 83 members of the Corps of Cadets who will be entering the Army, Air Force, Navy or Marine Corps.
