Richard E. Wainerdi, the president of the Texas Medical Center and a commencement speaker, spent 20 years at Texas A&M working in scientific and academic affairs. He founded the Nuclear Science Center and worked at the Activation Analysis Research Laboratory, the German Synfuels Technology Retrieval Program, the Center for Energy and Mineral Resources and the University's College of Medicine. He was a chemical engineering professor and the associate vice president for academic affairs. He did research in micro-analytical and radio-analytical chemistry, using computer coupled and automated systems, and in the production of alternative fuels.
