Commencement speakers to offer words of advice | Jerry R. Strawser

Strawser said that he beieves the future job market lieves the future job market should be very good for the graduates, specifically those from his department, and credited A&M for that.
"Employers in my area, business, are looking for graduates with good corporate skills and who are overall productive citizens," Strawser said. "I think that Texas A&M prepares its students very well for that."
Strawser said that he was very honored to speak at Saturday's commencement ceremony.
Strawser was born in Charlottesville, Va., but his family moved to Bryan, Texas, shortly after. He earned his bachelor's, master's and a doctorate in accounting from Texas A&M in 1983, 1984 and 1985. He became a certified public accountant in Texas a year later.
"I went to Bryan High School and so, I was familiar with the A&M campus," Strawser said. "So I decided to come to school here."
Strawser returned to A&M and served as the dean of the Mays Business School from 2001 through 2006. During that time, he was the developmental council chairman of Mays, as well as the KPMG chairman in accounting.
Since then, he has helped raise more than $50 million in commitments for faculty, student and program support, such as support for named chairmen, professorships, faculty fellowships and graduate student fellowships.
Before arriving at A&M, Strawser served as the dean of the C.T. Bauer College of Business at the University of Houston, where he was the Arthur Andersen & Co. Alumni Professor of Accounting.
He was a member of the faculty at Louisiana State University prior to that.
Strawser co-authored three textbooks and more than 60 journal articles. He has had the honor of presenting numerous papers at national academic conferences.
Before his academic career, Strawser had public accounting experience working with two international accounting firms. He developed and delivered many executive development programs to many organizations such as Continental Airlines, Halliburton, Minute Maid, Shell and Southwest Bank of Texas.
