Jeffery S. Vitter accepted the offer to become the university's provost and executive vice president for academics Wednesday.

Vitter's previous post was the Frederick L. Hovde Dean of the College of Science at Purdue University, which is a renowned land grant and research institution.

President Elsa Murano said in her announcement that Vitter is a dynamic leader with a proven record of success at several prestigious private and public institutions. Murano also said that she believes Vitter will bring strategic planning and leadership experience to Texas A&M.

In June, Vitter spoke to students and faculty members about his goals for A&M.

Vitter stressed the importance of diversity, research strength, a good partnership with the state and the importance of the study abroad program and faculty exchange for research purposes.

Michael Hall, the executive associate dean for the College of Science, said that he is looking forward to working with Vitter in the fall.

"It is my opinion that the search process went very well and Vitter is a very good selection and was an outstanding candidate," Hall said.

Hall said that even though he does not know Vitter well, he believes that he is the right person for the position.

"Everything we, in the College of Science, do will go through Vitter and his office," Hall said.

He explained that the provost must approve all the major decisions that the University makes.

"Any faculty hires, curriculum changes or any general academic issues will have to be approved by him, so that means they we will be working very closely with him," Hall said.

Hall also said that he believes that Vitter will fit into A&M because of his position at Purdue University.

"Purdue is very similar to A&M, especially since it is a land grant university and the emphasis they place on agriculture there," Hall said.

Hall added that while he is anxious to work with Vitter he also commended Jerry Strawser, who served as interim provost and executive vice [resident for academics last year.

Vitters tenure as provost will begin Aug. 15, pending formal approval from the A&M Board of Reagents during its July 31 - Aug. 1 meeting.
