Van Zandt awarded

Texas A&M junior Matt Van Zandt was named to the Cleveland Golf All-America Scholar Team by the Golf Coaches Association of America. Van Zandt posted a 74.71 stroke average a year ago and placed in the top 25 in five spring tournaments, including a tie for sixth at the U.S. Collegiate Championship. He earned Academic All-Big 12 honors and was selected to the Big 12 Spring Sports Good Works Team. 96 players earned the honor in Division I. To be eligible for Cleveland Golf All-America Scholar status an individual must be a junior or senior academically and compete in at least two full years at the collegiate level, participate in 70-percent of his team's competitive rounds or compete in the NCAA Championships, have a stroke average under 76.0 and maintain a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.2.

World Junior Relay gold

BYDGOSZCZ, Poland - Winning both 4 x 400 relays kept the United States atop the medal count as the 12th IAAF World Junior Championships concluded Sunday evening in Zdzislaw Stadium. Texas A&M had a pair of gold medalist from the two relay victories for the U.S. squad in Jessica Beard and Bryan Miller. They each ran the second leg for the United States. The American women dominated the field again the in 4 x 400. Texas A&M's Jessica Beard split 51.1 and turned Lanie Whittaker's strong opening leg of 52.9 into a commanding lead with her second leg carry. Then Erica Alexander and Miami's Takecia Jameson continued the strong effort with splits of 52.4 and 53.8 to complete the victory.

Hamelin resigns with Cowboys

IRVING, Texas - Dallas Cowboys safety Ken Hamlin won't have to wait until after the season for a long-term contract. The Cowboys and Hamlin agreed Tuesday on a $39 million, six-year deal that includes a $9 million signing bonus and guarantees the Pro Bowl safety about $15 million. After coming to Dallas on a $2.5 million free agent deal following four years in Seattle, the 27-year-old Hamlin set career highs with five interceptions and 102 tackles for the Cowboys last season. He was a starter for the NFC in his first Pro Bowl.
