Three restaurants in the Bryan-College Station area had permits suspended for 24 hours and had to pay $500 re-inspection fees for not passing health inspections. They were Tampico Mexican Restaurant, Atami Steak and Sushi and Ozona Grill and Bar.

"At Tampico the inspectors found more than 10 roaches in a kitchen cabinet," said Jesus Rodriguez, an environmental health specialist with the Brazos County Health Department and A&M class of 2004.

"Anytime we have an insect infestation we cite them and then automatically shut them down for 24 hours and then we re-inspect them to determine whether to open them back up," Rodriguez said.

Tampico was unable to be reached for comment. Rodriguez said the restaurant made necessary changes and pest control eliminated the infestation.

"Atami Steak and Sushi also had their permit suspended," Rodriguez said. "With sushi, we have a lot of precautions and they have to do something to the rice to make sure it does not build up bacteria because of temperature demands."

Rodriguez said raw foods have specific rules because of precautions that must be made.

"There were specifications they needed to keep to while serving raw food," he said. "The sushi was not being prepared properly under the rules."

Like Tampico, Atami corrected the situation and was closed for 24 hours. Atami paid the $500 re-inspection fee and is open.

Ozona Grill and Bar had several problems.

"There were too many violations to continue operation," said Rodriguez.

Drink and sunglasses on a food preparation table, mold on lemons and a rusted can, a drink mix with a nozzle touching the floor and improper food temperatures were a few of the violations Ozona was cited for.

Ozona corrected the problems and opened following the 24 hour closure.
