MSC Open House offers many opportunities to new students

Students will have the opportunity to browse through Texas A&M student organizations and find where they belong at the biannual MSC Open House Sunday.
Eric Blodgett, communications coordinator and advisor to the MSC Marketing Resource Team, said that the goal of the MSC Open House is to offer a recruiting tool to student organizations and to get students more involved with the University.
"We are expecting big numbers this year," Blodgett said. "There will probably be between ten and fifteen thousand students coming through the doors. It's a big program."
In terms of student organizations, Blodgett said that last year there were 408 tables reserved and this year there will be 406 tables for the various organizations.
In addition to campus organizations, visitors to the MSC Open House can expect entertainment in the flag room and outside of the J. Wayne Stark Gallery.
"We have several organizations, like dance groups and martial arts groups, who will be providing demonstrations for entertainment," Blodgett said.
He added that the 12th Man International would be open during the Open House festivities.
"There has always be some kind of food and drink provided but this year dinning services will be involved," he said.
Although MSC Open House encourages all students to participate, Ryan Gentry, a junior accounting major, said that it is a great way for freshman to get involved.
"Open House is something that makes A&M different from other universities," Gentry said. "We encourage participation and involvement in student activities."
Gentry is the chief advisor of global economy for G.E.N.T.S., or Gentlemen Enabling Nations to Succeed, a global service brotherhood organization.
Joe Trevino, a senior sociology major and a member of the Singing Cadets, said that many of the university choirs would attend MSC Open House to recruit new members.
"The Singing Cadets is the second oldest student organization on campus and we perform a variety of music, from Broadway to patriotic, and we are looking for new members," Trevino said.
He said that the Women's Chorus, which will be traveling to Eastern Europe this coming summer, is also still holding auditions and will be represented at Open House.
MSC Open House will be from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Sunday. The next opportunity for students to join campus organizations will be Jan. 25, 2009, during the spring Open House.
