Over the weekend, the No. 11 Texas A&M Women's Soccer team beat Virginia Tech and No. 17 Wake Forest in the Hawthorne Suites Invitational hosted by Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Va.
A&M started the tournament off right on Friday with a 3-1 win over Virginia Tech with goals from junior Cydne Currie and senior Laura Grace Robinson
In the 26th minute, Currie notched the first goal of the game with assist from freshman Rebecca Herrera. Herrera was midfield as she passed to Currie who sent a crossing shot to the far post to give the Aggies the lead.
Sophomore goalkeeper Kelly Dyer kept the Aggies in the game, stopping a career-high eight shots in the game, five of which came from the Hokies' Marika Gray who scored in the 32nd minute to tie the game.
In the 77th minute, senior Laura Grace Robinson scored the game-winning goal with the assist from freshman Beth West. The Aggies added an own goal in the 72nd minute to pull away 3-1.
"Virginia tech is an athletic, tough team," Head Coach G. Guerrieri told AggieAthletics.com "They made it very difficult for us to play, so I'm obviously real proud of our team for getting a road win against an ACC foe."
On Sunday, the Aggies beat No. 17 Wake Forest 2-1 to move their record to 5-1-0 with goals scored by sophomore Inge Harding and junior Cydne Currie.
"It was a great weekend for Texas A&M soccer," Guerrieri said. "Getting two road wins against ACC teams is a nice feather in the team's cap. You're going to have to score quality goals against a national top 10 team like Wake Forest and those were the kind of goals Inge and Cydne scored today."
The first half proved to be a defensive battle as it ended in a 0-0 draw with four shots from the Aggies and two for the Deacons. The second half would be a different story as three minutes into the second half senior Laura Grace Robinson drew a foul and earned the first free kick of the half. Freshman Rebecca Herrera sent a pass towards the right side of the post and Harding headed the ball near side to give the Aggies the 1-0 lead.
The Aggies had the momentum and were on the attack much of the second half. Sophomore Whitney Hooper blazed down the right side of the penalty box sending a pass to the nearby Currie who headed the ball into the goal near the far post for her second goal of the tournament giving the Aggies a 2-0 lead in the 76th minute.
The Deacons went on the attack as Jill Hutchinson claimed a loose ball that bounced through the Aggies' penalty box and capitalized with a goal to the left side of the goal pulling the Deacons within one.
The Aggies tightened up on defense for the remaining minutes of the game to seal their second victory of the tournament. A&M put eight shots on goal while holding Wake Forest to only four.
The Aggies resume play at home against Princeton at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
