Before this weekend's Tar Heel Invitational golf tournament in Chapel Hill, N.C., the Texas A&M women's golf team had not played in a tournament since finishing in 12th place at the NCAA Fall Preview on September 8.
"Having three weeks off between events has really helped us to prepare," Head Coach Trelle McCombs said. "The girls have worked very hard and are ready to compete."
Friday the Aggies hit the road to compete at the invitational tournament at Finley Golf Course this weekend, finishing in 6th place. A&M finished 32 strokes behind the tournament winner, Wake Forest.
The Aggies were led by the trio of junior Ashley Freeman, senior Lauren Johnson and sophomore Sarah Zwartynski who coming into the final round of play Sunday were all tied in 16th place with a score of 5-over-par.
Of the three, Zwartynski led the way Sunday posting a score of 74 (+2) jumping up the leader board three spots to finish the tournament tied for 13th place with an overall score of 7-over-par.
Johnson dropped a spot to 17th place, finishing one shot behind her teammate Zwartynski with a score of 8-over-par during the 54-hole tournament. Freeman bogeyed 5 of the 10 par fours in her final round, dropping her down the leader board to 28th place with a score of 11-over-par for the tournament. Also competing for the Aggies was true freshman Crystal Reeves who finished the tournament tied for 57th place, posting a score of eighteen over.
In a sport that takes the top four of five competitor's scores, the Aggies were one score away from finishing at the top. On the opening round of the tournament, the Aggies top three scores were a combined 3-over-par, while the fourth and final score was seven shots worse at 10-over-par.
"We had a little trouble getting that fourth score today but we are so close to something really special," McCombs said. "Our four and five spot aren't satisfied and are ready to help the others."
With two tournaments remaining in the 2008 fall season, the Aggies will look to bounce back Friday as they travel to Knoxville, Tennessee to play in the Mercedes Benz Collegiate Championships.
The three day, 54 hole tournament will include another field of stiff competition as nationally ranked teams such as Tennessee, Chattanooga, and Central Florida will be competing.
