The Ross Volunteers is a group of 72 seniors and juniors selected from different companies of the Corps. They serve as the official Honor Guard for Governor of Texas and represent Texas A&M.
"The inductees are chosen because of their overall character, "said RVs public relations officer Danny Hernandez, a senior sociology major.
RVs began in 1887 as the Scott Volunteers. They were renamed in honor of Lawrence Sullivan Ross, known commonly as Sul Ross, on his death in 1898.
"In no way do we want credit for our services," Hernandez said. "We are meant to be faceless strangers serving the community and we want no publicity in regards to it. If someone needs us, we will serve."
President Elsa A. Murano, who was in attendance at the induction, said Ross Volunteers are the elite of the corps in every way.
"My first experience [with Ross Volunteers] was when I went to Silver Taps and the role they play in ceremony," Murano said. "It is not easy to become one and I am proud that there are some women RVs here."
Some of the RVs duties are to perform the 21-gun salute at Silver Taps and Muster.
In the past, they have marched in parades for inaugural celebrations for Gov. Rick Perry and President George W. Bush.
The RVs can be identified at these events by their starched white dress uniforms with a scarlet sash. To be a member of the RVs, the cadet must be a junior with above average grades, pass a review board and live up to the RV's creed.
Lt. Gen. Weber, vice president of student affairs, said RVs are a special organization.
"Texas A&M is a military college of Texas and is well represented by the Ross Volunteers," Weber said. "These cadets are, without a doubt, some of the sharpest and squared away of Texas A&M and we should be proud of them."
RV inductee, Austin Carnes, a junior agriculture and life sciences major, said it was an honor to be a part of the RVs.
"It is humbling to be in a room with the different Corp leaders," he said.
