In January, reports surfaced of an unidentified flying object seen in the night sky above Stephenville, Texas. The event struck curiosity in residents and caused a stir in the mainstream media. While there was no agreement as to what was seen in the North Texas sky that evening, the answer may be a cover band that plays Thursdays at The Tap.

The foursome that make up The Space Rockers have a story, and they are sticking to it. Ask members Captain Cosmos, Probe, Stinger and Thunderstick any question about their past, and they will respond with an answer pertaining to their earlier life in space.

Singer/guitarist/bassist Captain Cosmos said The Space Rockers are four superstars, each from different planets who came together to form "the most famous superhero band in the universe."

People on the dance floor said the band is four guys dressed in Power Ranger-esque costumes that play covers of a wide assortment of dance songs.

"Our spaceship crash-landed in Stephenville, Texas, but when we landed, we landed in a herd of cows," singer/guitarist/bassist Stinger said.

Singer/guitarist/bassist Probe said the landing initially worried them.

"We thought that was the dominant life-form," he said, "so we were like, 'This planet is totally lame.'"

The Space Rockers have relocated their "spaceship" to Austin.

"Austin is a much more happening town," Probe said, "and there [are] a lot less cows."

The group travels mostly over East and North Texas, playing at least three to four times a week. They are a weekly act at The Tap in College Station, and they play every other Tuesday at a bar in Waco.

While most of the foursome's performances are within state lines, the band will be heading to Key West, Fl. this spring break, where they are booked at a bar for week.

"We have 78 songs in our repertoire," Stinger said.

Probe said they hope to increase that number soon.

"We have two songs in the chute, so 80 songs by next week," he said.

Songs range from 1970s music to modern, touching on every guilty pleasure hit within that time span. Everything from Michael Jackson to Soulja Boy can be heard coming from The Space Rockers' stage.

The band feeds off the crowd throughout the performance. They said they were brought here to bring "Earthlings their groove back," and on their ideal planet, everybody in the venue would be in front of the stage, dancing.

"The main thing we want Earth to know is that we came to party," Stinger said. "We are progressive. We are not here to play the same thing over and over. If Earthlings come to a show and know of something they would like to hear, we want them to let us know."

Captain Cosmos said it is unknown how long the band will entertain College Station and how much longer their "visit" to the blue planet will be.

"As long as people want to come and see us every week, we will stay," Captain Cosmos said. "We like you people. We like it here."
