Emily Sparvero became the Young Conservatives of Texas adviser Nov. 25 after John Fike, associate professor of engineering technology and industrial distribution, resigned from the position Nov. 19.
"Dr. Sparvero sent me an e-mail on Nov. 24, the day that The Battalion ran the story about Dr. Fike's resignation," said YCT chairman Tony Listi, a senior political science major. "She saw that we were in need of [a new adviser] and Dr. Sparvero understands how important it is that proponents of limited government and personal responsibility have a voice on college campuses."
Listi said Sparvero supports YCT's efforts to promote conservative ideals and contribute to the diverse political dialogues at A&M.
"I would be happy to sit down with you and other executive officers to discuss the possibility of serving as an adviser for your group," said Sparvero, visiting sport finance professor, in an e-mail to Listi. "My contract with A&M is through July, but I would be interested in serving as an interim adviser to give you time to find another adviser beginning in the fall."
Though Fike resigned, they said they still appreciated his service to YCT.
"[We] thank him for helping us get newly reestablished, but YCT is happy to be moving forward with an adviser who understands and best represents our values," Listi said.
He said YCT is brainstorming activities for the spring.
"We will continue to promote conservatism and oppose liberalism, educate students and the public, participate in campus activism and campaign for political candidates," Listi said.
