However, Texas A&M will be celebrating from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday in Memorial Student Center room 224 with the Martin Luther King Jr. Breakfast.
The Memorial Student Center Complex Carter G. Woodson Black Awareness Committee, part of the Campus with a Dream program, will be putting on the event in honor of King.
The speaker will be Julianne Malveaux, who has a doctorate in economics and is the president of Bennett College for Women.
"Malveaux is someone who works with students and inspires us to follow King's dream and is experienced with applying all [King's] ideas to campus," said WBAC director of speakers Amber Jordan, a junior management major.
Some students said Barack Obama's inauguration being within a day of King's commemoration is fitting because it is an actualization of King's dream.
"Obama is the son of [an] African immigrant and he is the next American president," said chairwoman of WBAC Josephine Sorgwe, a junior political science major. "I cannot put into words what kind of feeling it is. It is great to see how far we've come.
"King said the night before he died that he had seen the promised land, but he thought he could not get there. Yet he knew this day would come."
Raven Cunningham, a senior psychology major, said King was a philanthropic figure and an influence on the country because of what he stood for.
"He represents the continuous struggle and sacrifice towards the goal of justice and human progress. The
breakfast celebrates his efforts and achievements that we benefit from today. It is an event in honor of a human rights icon and a banquet for his successors."
Tickets
Tickets for the event will be available at the Memorial Student Center box office. They are $5 for students and $8 for
non-students.
