A&M opens track facility with victory

In the first indoor track and field meet to take place at Texas A&M in history, both the No. 1 women's team and No. 6 men's team walked away with victories. In front of 3,016 fans, the women knocked off No. 4 Tennessee 83-69 and the men's team beat No. 7 Texas 81-77. The three-hour meet featured a school-record matching triple jump by junior Zuheir Sharif with a mark of 53-3. The Aggies swept the top four spots in the triple jump event with all four recording career-best indoor marks. For both the men and women, the Aggies swept their opponents in the 60-, 200- and 400-meter sprints.Senior Shadrack Songok, who carried the Texas A&M men's cross-country team to the NCAA Championship meet in November, won the 5,000-meter race with a time of 14:32.92. The Aggie swept the top three spots in the race.In the women's 5,000-meter race juniors Christina Munoz and Elizabeth Slaughter finished in second and third place behind Tennessee senior Katie Van Horn. Munoz recorded a time of 17:16.63.The Tennessee women swept the middle distance events with top four finishes in the 800-meter and top five finishes in the mile.In the field events, senior Deidre Tarver finished in second place with a career-best 54-5.5 in the weight throw while senior Anteneshia Lindsey also finished in second with a shot put throw of 46-11.
