The Texas A&M women's tennis team fought through a 38-degree wind chill when it took on No. 28 Denver on Saturday.

Denver was ranked higher and started more seniors than A&M has upperclassmen listed on the team roster. The Aggies had three freshmen playing in their first team tennis matches of their collegiate careers.

"We are so young," said freshman Lauren Santacroce. "Everyone had doubts about us."

After earning the first point of the match by taking two of the three doubles matches, the Aggies dropped their first three singles matches and trailed Denver 3-1. In the three remaining singles matches, the Aggies were down a set in one match and the other two matches had lost momentum by dropping the second set.

"I commend the players for having the poise to stick it out," said A&M Head Coach Bobby Kleinecke. "Our back was against the wall the whole time in the singles. I knew certain players had to step up, and that was the difference in those three matches."

The 2, 4, and 6 spots answered the call as Santacroce and sophomores Morgan Frank and Stephanie Davidson won their matches in three sets to give the Aggies a 4-3 victory over the Pioneers.

"Heart was the biggest thing in the match today," Davidson said. "They were ranked above us and we are such a young team, but this is a really good win.

The Aggies will look to carry the momentum from Denver on the road for the second match of the 2009 season. Texas A&M (1-0) will travel next week to Los Angeles to take on St. Mary's College. The Aggies will return back to George P. Mitchell Tennis Center on February 6th when they play host to Auburn.

"Overall this win gives us momentum into the next match," Frank said. "Conditions were horrible, but we fought through it and this gives us a lot of momentum going into L.A."
