The Multicultural Greek Council (MGC) and the National Panhellenic Council (NPHC) will be hosting the Minority Greek Leadership Conference Thursday through Sunday. Texas A&M's MGC has sixteen active member organizations. Six out of nine organizations in the NPHC. The sororities and fraternities include African-American, Latino, Asian, and non-culturally based organizations.
This year, the Minority Greek Leadership Conference will be hosted in Houston, at the Sheraton Brookhollow Hotel. This is the second time that the conference will be help in Houston. The co-chairs that will help lead the conference are Luis Gonzalez who is a member of the Omega Delta Phi Fraternity, Inc. and Bennett Love, member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.
"The Minority Greek Leadership Conference evolved from what used to be the Multicultural Greek Council Conference, a national leadership conference that catered to the needs of minority Greeks around the country. This conference, national in scope, was discontinued after a successful run and made local due to monetary constraints," said Luis Gonzalez, a senior communications major.
Gonzalez explained that in the spring of 2007, the Department of Greek Life envisioned the return of the MGCC, but this time it would be a dual partnership between the Multicultural Greek Council and the National Pan-Hellenic Council of Texas A&M.
The conference will present topics that are unique to the Minority Greek community and will include open discussions as well as speakers and interactive workshops. The conference will strive to promote leadership skills in the ethnic Greek organizations.
"What we're really trying to promote is Greek unity and leadership skills. We have a lot of events this year including keynote speakers and seven to ten workshops where students can come out and participate," said Bennett Love, a senior civil engineering major.
