Amy Roloff, of The Learning Channel's "Little People, Big World," will kick off Social Justice Week today at Texas A&M by speaking to students about some of the challenges she and her family have had to overcome.
Social Justice Week will be through Friday, with one to two events scheduled each day to address issues like sexism, racism and classism. These events will be sponsored by the Leadership and Service Center in the Department of Student Activities.
Mike Starr, a graduate assistant for the leadership and services center in the department of student activities, was one of the organizers.
"We tried to pick [issues] that are meaningful to college students and members of a college community," Starr said.
He said while it is important to reach the student body, they are trying to target A&M's faculty and staff.
"Everybody has a right to free speech," Starr said. "This week will hopefully be an opportunity for people to use that right to express how they feel about these issues."
He said a big part of social justice is to get people involved. Student organizations trying to address these types of social issues will set up tables so students can know about the activities.
"They were relevant issues for people our age," he said. "We wanted to pick topics that would get conversations going."
The Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Resource Center, along with the GLBTA organization, will be participating in Social Justice Week.
Students will be talking to those interested in the organization, as well as handing out resource materials and telling people how they can become an Aggie Ally.
"Social Justice Week calls attention to concepts and communities that are often underrepresented and misunderstood," said Lowell Kane, program coordinator of the GLBT Resource Center and adviser to the student organization GLBT Aggies.
Kane said the week is an opportune time to provide resources that lead to genuine and honest conversations toward myth busting and deconstructing stereotypes about marginalized populations.
